June 2010

Shaw Bassers

Tommy & Lib Phillips Memorial Tournament

June 12th 2010 the Shaw Bassers, ABA, and CATT hosted the first Tommy & Lib Phillips Memorial Tournament.  That was the first time I had been to Clearwater Cove marina since their deaths.  I thought the marina would not be the same without Tommy & Lib there, and the fact that it was under new ownership I did not know what to expect.

After all the rush of getting everyone registered and launched for the tournament, I had a chance to sit down with the new owner - Stacey Seegars - and talk with him about the past, present and future of the Marina.  During our conversation I found out that he was also a personal friend of Tommy & Lib, which made it easier to talk to him. I also met his mother – Joanna - and sister – Stephanie - who help him operate the marina.  Stacey, his mom and sister made us feel welcome just like Tommy & Lib always did and they were willing to help out anyway they could to make the tournament a success. Stacey has made a lot of improvements to the marina, and he’s willing to let tournament fishermen use the facility just like Tommy & Lib always did.

Stacey has agreed to let us put a memorial up for Tommy & Lib at the marina.  We want to place a stone with a picture of Tommy & Lib and a couple of benches facing out over the water.

The first annual Tommy & Lib Memorial Tournament was very successful.  We had thirty-four teams entered in the tournament, and the results are as follows.

1st - Walt Almond / Chad Rabon                          20.13lbs - $880

2nd - Jeremy Talbert / Scott Peavy                       20.04lbs - $595

3rd - Jimmy Mcfarland / Calvin Griggs                  19.64lbs - $357

4th - Chad Gainey / Mack Kitchens                      17.82lbs - $238

5th - Kareem White / James Rabox                       16.14lbs - $191

6th - Glenn Altman                                                15.76lbs - $120

 1st Big Fish - Ray Dowey / Chanon Dowey           5.86lbs -  $460

2nd Big Fish - Walt Almond / Chad Rabon             5.82lbs -  $200

Raised $1020.00 for the Memorial / Children's home and got $80 more in donations to total $1100! All funds that are not used for the memorial will go to Free Will Baptist Children’s home.

In closing, the tournament officials of the Tommy & Lib Memorial Tournament want to thank the new owner of Clearwater Cove Marina – Stacey, his mom and sister for helping making this a successful tournament.

   2009/2010 Tournament Year

We are down to the two tournaments of the year, and both of them are evening tournaments.  Reminder our first meeting for the 2010-2011 tournament year will be held at Sumter Marine located on Hwy 15 S. Everybody is required to complete a new Membership Application.

Warning!!!!
Safety

Summer is here which makes fishing tournaments almost unbearable due to the heat.  It seams that we go from one extreme to the other.  This last winter was the coldest winter since 1994 now it looks like we will have the hottest summer also.  Carry enough liquids with you so that you do not dehydrate during the tournament.  Make sure your boats safety equipment  is working properly, this also includes the boat trailer.  Items to check are kill switch, bilge pump, livewell pump, batteries, running lights boat, trailer lights, trailer wheel bearings, and last make sure the outboard motor is running properly.  I would like to suggest that if you are fishing alone in the boat that you wear your life jacket at all times.

Next Scheduled Special Events

Toys For Tots Tournament is scheduled for 23 Oct 10 at Clearwater Cove Marina.

Tournament Schedule

Our next tournament will be 19 June 10 at Fishing Creek, launching out of the Hwy 21 Access Landing. In July we will have our evening tournament 5:00 pm to 1:00 am on Lake Wateree Clearwater Cove.  We will be having our annual cookout in the campgrounds at Clearwater Cove Marina.  The cookout starts at 3:00 pm that gives us enough time to eat and launch everybody out by 5:00 pm.

Club Update

I would like to remind all the members that June meeting is when we have nominations for club officers, and also receive Tournament Proposal sheet for next year.  They must be completed and turned back in at the July meeting, so the Tournament Committee can set the 2010-2011 tournament year.
